PRESS RELEASE: WATERMAN FUND ANNOUNCES
RECENT GRANT AWARDS, UPCOMING ANNUAL DINNER EVENT
29 January 2004 For Immediate Release For More Information: Carl Demrow Phone: (802) 439-6773 E mail: ccdemrow@valley.net The Waterman Fund is pleased to announce its 2004 recipients for alpine stewardship grants. The Fund's objective is to strengthen the human stewardship of the open summits, exposed ridgelines, and alpine areas of the Northeast. This year's recipients represent a broad geographic range and a diversity of projects. The Adirondack Mountain Club, in partnership with The Adirondack Nature Conservancy and the Department of Environmental Conservation, will receive funding for an alpine photo-monitoring project. The goal of the project is to assess whether impacted alpine areas are deteriorating, holding steady, or recovering. The project follows up on photo-monitoring work done by Dr. Edwin H. Ketchledge and the ADK in each of the last decades since the 1960's. By using visual comparisons, the organizations hope to determine whether various types of stewardship are helping to protect fragile alpine areas. The Green Mountain Club will receive support for an alpine outreach project, designed to teach school and camp trip leaders techniques to manage the impacts of groups while traveling in the Green Mountains. The Waterman Fund support will help cover the expense of hiring a group outreach coordinator. In the White Mountains, the Appalachian Mountain Club will receive funding for their upcoming, summer 2004 Northeastern Alpine Stewardship Gathering. Co-hosted with the US Forest Service, the event will feature symposiums, a keynote speaker and field trips. The Fund is also announcing the date and location of its upcoming annual dinner. The dinner will be held Sunday evening, March 14, starting at 5 pm at the Mist Grill, 92 Stowe Street, Waterbury, Vermont. The annual event is open to the public and will feature a special announcement from Fund President Chuck Wooster, a remarkable alpine show from the Green Mountain Club, and the presentation of this year's Waterman Fund Alpine Stewardship Award. Due to limited seating, reservations are required. To make a reservation, please contact Fund board member Carl Demrow via ccdemrow@valley.net or (802) 439-6773.
